Miller- If only you Understood

As the old folks would put it "think before you speak" and I think that the Weimar Government should have done that. The Weimar Government has shown us many mistakes that could have been prevented only if they would have taken the time to think and critically analyze. As a German citizen I feel as if I have been let down because there is nothing being done to make any situation better for us citizens. I worked as hard as I can to provide for my family and me because I am a single mother. My husband, he was a very dedicated soldier that was killed during the war. The government has shown me little support, all that they are worried about is trying to fix what they should have though about and that is the Treaty of Versailles. This was supposedly the nice way of saying that peace will some how be brought about, but yet and still I see hardship. The peace settlement was to end the war but since we are the LOSERS it will only get harder for us. Signing this settlement meant we had to pay all reparations of the war which was 33 billion dollars and signing a war guilt clause. And furthermore we fought hard to get land but in the end it was useless because it was taken from us. The government didn't even try to regain it back. That land was valuable to us because even though we had to pay the reparations and unfortunately sign the war guilt clause, we still could have looked upon those lands to gives us support. As soon as my government did this I began to become very ashamed of being a German citizen. As all of the things had to be completed the economy would sure enough be in a bigger hole. There is no way that the government could be thinking about us citizens because if they were then they would have revamped what they just have signed, the Treaty of Versailles. In clear words the Weimar Government and the way they handled WWI was terrible, they were only thinking about that day and not the rest of the days of hardship to come. The only thing that the Weimar Government to the citizens to making it harder for us to provide a basic necessity life. The soldiers come home to find that the unemployment rates are ridiculous so the women like me are really struggling to provide for the family. I see little to no support from the government to help the citizens (who actually exist) to give them help.

I think it is time to move on to another government one that will be more cautious of the things that they sign and give up!

  1. Hey Brittney, German single mother, I believe that what you said is somewhat right; The Weimar government did make some bad decisions, like signing the armistice and agreeing to all the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. They should have tried to negotiate some of the terms of the treaty instead of just agreeing. But I believe that the Weimar government was in a hard spot. They were trying to think about what would happen to the people of Germany if the decided not to agree to the treaty; if they fought the treaty then they would have faced invasion from the Allies. As our notes said the Weimar government was in between a rock and a hard place. I think that is hard for citizens to understand sometimes why the government makes the decision they to, they only tend to see the immediate effect on them.

  2. I agree with Alyson!
Anyone in charge is never going to be able to accomodate the wants and needs of every single person. With that being said, the Weimar Government probably should have stayed in the war a little longer, but like Russia, the government thought it would be better for the people to get out. The only way to do this was obviously to just sign the treaty, regardless of its terms, because I believe that even trying to negotiate the terms would have angered the Allies; thus causing an invasion. Yes, land was lost, but even if Germany didn't sign the treaty, the Allies would have invaded, defeated Germany, and took the land anyway. So doesn't that show the Weimar Government actually was thinking about the people?

  3. I agree!!!! The Weimar Republic did not show there support for the people!! And just to think of the single parents during that time period really makes me think of the hardships they faced. But I disagree with alyson and anitra, becasue although a government can not meet the needs of every person they still should at least put forth the effort to show that they are trying. All the Weimar Republic had in mind was how much power they could have over the people, and not the bare necessities.

  4. I agree with you. The Weimar government has only brought down our country. The two steps we gained, they took away. We, Germany, are in worse problems now with the Weimar government than we were with the Kaisers. However, I disagree about being ashamed of being a German citizen. I am ashamed of the government we live under, but as far as being a German citizen, we have done nothing wrong. We have been loyal citizens to our country and have stood by our men, sons, husbands, fathers, as they fought gloriously for Germany. Some of us have unfortunately lost those great men, and it has put our families in hardships. However, families with those men back are also in hardships because of the government. There are not enough jobs for all the men coming back because of the economy the Weimar government has produced. I definitely agree!! It is definitely time to give up on this government and put in a new one. What has this government done, other than hurt Germany??

Responding to Anitra’s last question: the Weimar government signing the Treaty of Versailles was more covering their own butts (sorry if I’m not allowed to say that). They did not want an invasion of their country over their heads. But later, they show that when times get tough, they flee, leaving their German citizens behind to fend for themselves. Not only do they do this once, which might be forgivable, but Ebert flees twice. So doesn’t this show the Weimar government was actually just looking after themselves and not the citizens??
