Miller- He Gained it..and Maintained it...Power!

To what extent did Hitler use Totalitarianism?

The use of totalitarianism was used to accomplish a specific goal; and that was to maintain power in Germany. Totalitarianism was used to a certain degree by Hitler in order to maintain his power. In his many different ways, Hitler used legal methods to maintain his power. Propaganda, the Gestapo, the army, concentration camps and other methods were some that were used to maintain his power (4) In order for to Hitler to maintain his power, he had to implement goals, gain and maintain support from the people. A dictatorship by consent was the method used by Hitler to maintain his power. The people in Germany gave Hitler his power and this was Hitler's way to maintain his power through totalitarianism methods. Although there may have been some people in Germany that didn't want Hitler to come to power, majority of the people gave him the power by their consent. One method of totalitarianism that was used by Hitler was the creation of the Gestapo. The Gestapo was Hitler's secret police that wanted to get rid of opposition. This concept was slightly different because instead of Hitler making the people fearful of him, the Germans were feared each other. They feared each other because of denunciations and these denunciations were accusations of people who were opposed from Hitler. This shows how Hitler was slowly maintaining his power because the people began to fear each other and not Hitler himself.

Propaganda was implemented in Germany and was controlled by Goebbels, who was the minister in propaganda. Propaganda made it inevitable for the people in Germany to follow Hitler's ideology because the propaganda was very intense and it portrayed what Hitler wanted to create for Germany. Although this propaganda was created, tensions began to form because it was anti-Semitic towards the Jewish people. They (Hitler, Goebbels and the Nazi's) realized that maintaining power came with controlling the media. By controlling the media they were able to broadcast Hitler's ideology. by broadcasting this media, all the attention was focused on Hitler and his ideas. Once those ideas were placed in the minds of the poeple hatred of the Jews became a huge problem. This was a totalitarian method for maintaining power because the people became gullible to the propaganda that was being presented to them. Any person that disagreed and tried to go against what was presented with consequences that took place(2,4)

And this brings me to another totalitarian method that Hitler used and that was the Gestapo. By implementing the Gestapo, Hitler saw that he did not have to use fear with the people because the Gestapo was there for him to get rid of the opposition. The Gestapo showed its importance because once they had gotten rid of the opposing people it then no one could potentially be detrimental to Hitler and/or his supporters. This shows how Hitler was able to create a group or Gestapo to get rid of the oppositions in Germany. By doing this he was able to maintain his power because he used other people than himself and so the people thought nothing of Hitler as being a bad leader. If anything the people of Germany would be in disfavor of one another. Denunciations also played an important role because the people made accusations about one another stating that they were against the government. This was also used as a totalitarian method to maintain power within his regime because the people then began to fears one another and not Hitler himself (4)

Hitler used a variety of totalitarian methods to maintain his regime but he did it all legally and with the consent of the people without the people realizing that he was maintaining his power in his own regime. He let the people make a way for him to maintain his power through the use of totalitarian methods.
