Lowder- the conditions had a direct effect on hitler's methods for gaining power

Despite all of the horrible things Hitler did while in control of Germany, his rise to power from a lowly soldier to Fuher can be seen as one of the greatest achievements by a single person of all time, but how was Hitler able to attain power so easily? It was due to a well formulated plan based on the conditions of the times.
The climate in Germany after WWI was an extremely tense one. The Weimar government was proving ineffective, there was extreme public unrest due to the acceptance of the TOV, and most importantly unemployment was skyrocketing to unheard of heights(cn). These three things were arguably Hitler's biggest deciding factors when formulating his methods for attaining power. The people of Germany were wary of the Weimars from the very beginning of their reign due to the fact that they pulled Germany out of WWI even though they were still winning(cn). This mistrust escalated when the Weimar government failed to follow through on promises to do things such as revamp the struggling economy, and even protect itself from relatively weak attempts at overthrows(cn). Along with this, the Weimars lost even more credibility when they agreed to fully comply with the terms of the TOV(cn). The public was outraged to find out that the government had agreed to accept responsibility for the war, and to pay over 33billion dollars in war reparations(cn). They were embarrassed to hear that lands they had gained and even some from before the war would be stripped from them and made into new countries and that their army would be reduced to 100,00 men; not enough to protect themselves from any attempt at invasion(cn). However, what did the Weimars in more than poor decision making or the TOV was the high unemployment that was crippling Germany, reaching heights of almost 1/3 of the work force(cn). This made the people of Germany call for change the most, because it hit the closest to home. If one out of every three work age people were unemployed then almost no family could have escaped the poverty. As families began to starve people would have become desperate looking for anyway to feed their family. People would have put survival needs over personal freedoms or political correctness. Unemployment was a disease and Hitler was the cure.
After hearing the complaints of the people and even experiencing these problems himself Hitler was able to formulate a plan for success. HItler knew that the people were fed up with the bureaucracy of the Weimars and ashamed by the TOV(cn). He also knew that they were desperate for a change that could bring prosperity back to Germany(cn). First, Hitler used powerful speeches and coups (although they were unsuccessful) to show the people of Germany that he was a "doer" . In his famous Beer Hall Putsch Hitler was able to gain national attention, and show that he would bypass the bureaucracy to make the changes that needed to be made. While the people became more open to radical changes this did not mean automatic success for Hitler. There was an equally as popular Left to balance Hitler's Right and to achieve power Hitler would have to defeat them. Hitler did this by creating a scape goat, the jews. He aligned the Jews in national opinion with the communists and in turn everything that was wrong with the country(cn). By doing this Hitler was able to kill the popularity of the left and give the German people a common thing to hate and unite against. With the Left defeated, Hitler had one final obstacle to overcome, and that was the Weimars. To do this Hitler would use fear. The Weimars saw how easily Hitler was able to defeat his opponents on the Left, and knew that his following was growing. They knew that it would only be a matter of time before Hitler was able to seize power and so they sought to tame him (cn). Because they feared Hitler and what he could do to their regime, the Weimars appointed Hitler Chancellor of Germany in 1934. Once Hitler held this position there was no stopping him. He slowly gained more and more power until he and his Nazi's were finally able to assume complete control of Germany, and the rest is history.
Among many other things, Hitler was a genius. He was able to see and understand the conditions of the day and then play to the desires and the fears of his people to assume control over Germany and become one of the most powerful men in the world.

  2. Very nice, Kyle. I really liked your analysis about Hitler being the only cure for desperate, unemployed people, and about how he used the Jews as scape goats. This paper does a good job of mixing the methods and conditions. It also has a concise thesis that helps to make your paper flow in a very structured way. I give this paper a 17 on the IB markband for its in-depth analysis and focus on the question. The only thing I would suggest changing would be to add multiple interpretations of the historical events.

I do feel that you might want to refte yourself a little bit more indepth for not just one way but if there were more then two possible reasons that you could fight back on all fronts but i do believe you covered most of that pretty well. overall i believe this is a grand paper i give it a ...17
