Yard-Hitler rise aided by the weakness of Weimar Government

After World War I Germany's Weimar government would allow the conditions in Germany to be ripe for a single party to gain control. Hitler and the Nazi party would use several legal methods to gain support and take over. It is because of the failures and weakness shown by the Weimar government that would help Hitler gain support from the people and rise to power.

Hitler would use the signing of the Treaty of Versailles as an opportunity to expose the weakness of the Weimar government. The signing of the Treaty Versailles showed a weakness in the Weimar government because the treaty forced Germany to pay for all war debt in the War Guilt Clause and it lost lots valuable land. The War Guilt Clause left Germany with a massive amount of debt and in order to pay this the Weimar government tried to produce more currency. This lead to the inflation in the economy and left many people unable to buy the goods they needed to survive. The Weimar government also made an agreement with the United States under the Dawes plan in 1925. This plan let Germany receive loans from the United States, hoping that they could stabilize Germany. But when the Great Depression struck the US and they were no longer able to help Germany, the German economy crashed again. Hitler would use propaganda and speeches, to take advantage of this situation. Hitler would persuade people by telling them how the Weimar was unable to support their people and having to rely on the United States loans. The propaganda that Hitler and the Nazis would use placed all the blame of the countries failures on the Weimar Government. Hitler blamed them for losing the war, the economic depression, and the loss of valuable land to other countries. The speeches Hitler would give would persuade people to join the Nazis by showing them the horrible condition they were living in and telling them how he would change that. Hitler was able to gain support by using these legal methods and taking advantage of the poor conditions the Weimar government had allow to occur.

Hitler and the Nazis would also take advantage of the weakness of the Weimar government. Hitler would focus on two main events to show their weakness. He would focus on the Spartacists uprising in which the Weimar was unable to put down by themselves. When the Spartacists uprising occurred the Weimar government was not strong enough to put it down. They had to rely on a military group known as the Freikorps to stop the Spartacist. Hitler would use this to show the people how the Weimar were unable to defend themselves and needed help from other groups. Hitler would also focus on the France and Belgium seizure of the Ruhr Valley. He would use this as another example of the Weimar government not being able to defend themselves and protect the people if there was an attack. Hitler would use these examples to persuade the people into believing that the Weimar government was weak.

It was because of the poor conditions and the weakness of the Weimar government that aided in Hitlers rise to power. Hitler would take advantage of this b y using several legal methods in order to gain support from the people. These conditions made Germany ripe for a single party to take over and Hitler and the Nazis would take full advantage of this. Hitler would gain enough support to become chancellor of Germany and for the Nazi party to receive 32% of the vote

  1. Lee, You made several good points about the Nazi party using the weakness of the Weimar government. Although you didn't talk much about the specific methods in which Hitler and the Nazi party went about personally taking advantages of those weaknesses, you made mention of propoganda which was good. Also, for the most part you spit mostly facts until the last paragraph, which was strictly analysis. On the Markband i grade this a 13.

  2. I would give this essay a 14.

You meet the requirements for scoring the 8-10 range because you provided accurate information that was relevant to the thesis question you stated in your introduction. The reason I gave this a 14 is because you didn't just list out the facts, you listed the facts and gave your analysis of the details and reasoning. Your analysis at the beginning was great, but however I feel that as the essay went on analysis was there, but it became weaker. But overall this essay was pretty good. Good job Yardage! ;)

  3. Hey Buddy,

I agree with a akevian and score your essay a 14. You had a strong thesis and all of your information related directly back to your original thesis. I feel like you had great analysis in the first paragraph, "showed a weakness in the Weimar Government because..." but I think you could have had more analysis in your second paragraph. More analysis in your second paragraph could get you into that 15-17 range. But overall it was a well developed essay.

  4. I have to agree with Brad, you had a very good thesis. Your essay had a strong focus, and all the evidence you brought up was clearly relevant. You had good analysis at the beginning, but towards the end you became somewhat implicit in the evidence you gave. Make sure you always elaborate on your evidence fully. You were very good about tying things back to your thesis. I give your post a 14, keep it up.

  5. Actually, sorry, I actually have to say this post is a 12, although the structure is good, there is not enough dual sided analysis to give it the higher mark.

  6. Lee,
Based on the markband, you make several good points and the focus was very in depth. You were consistent in relating and intertwining all of your ananlysis back to your orginal thesis. On the markband I would score your post a 12. A suggestion I would make is, giving a little more analysis when presenting your claim. I think that it would help you achieve higher on teh markband.
